Leap Year Geocache Souvenir....

I am feeling much better today....  guess that was just a 24 hour bug that has left me kind of tired.  But, no matter how tired I was, I wouldn't have missed the Lo de Marcos Geocache Meet and Greet that Memo hosted up at the tianguis area today.

The get-together was scheduled for 10 am, and by 9:45 several folks had already arrived.  Since a cacher could earn a special souvenir by attending an event on Leap Year Day, quite a few folks jumped at the chance to participate in this one.  While Mexico, and this part of Mexico, does have active members hiding caches, they are still kind of few and far between.  When Bill & I arrived here in December I checked for caches within a 30 mile radius....  there were none here in Lo de Marcos; the closest one was either at Sayulita or Guayabitis...  both towns about 15 miles either way.

When I took this photo not all the folks had arrived yet.

I think there were between 15 - 20 participants in all.

Several folks brought Travel Bugs to move along.  A Travel Bug looks like a dog-tag.  It is numbered and that number is recorded.  People attach various things to make their travel bug unique and then place it in a cache for another cacher to pick it up and place it in another area.

This is one of the biggest Travel Bugs I've seen...  I think it is called "Girl of the Night" or something like that.  It looks like a bustier..... the other side has sequins attached and looks like a fancy corset.  This couple will take it back to California next week and place it in a cache there.

The man on the left has found over 36,000 caches.  He's also placed several hundred to be found.  It was fun talking to him...  he plans to place several more in the La Penita area....  along a trail where all can be found on one long hike.  That's Memo in the middle....  he is the sponsor of today's event.  We had no idea how many people would show up so it was especially fun that so many did.

We all sat around talking for about an hour....  then most folks wanted to head out and find the caches hidden here.  There are 4 new ones now...  all within walking distance of downtown Lo de Marcos.

Since most folks who came are just here for the winter...  and most are heading "back home" in the near future, we had quite a diverse group...  everywhere from Californians to folks from Quebec.  It will be interesting to see where all those travel bugs will end up!

 Happy Leap Year Day!
If you didn't earn a souvenir, I hope you had a great day anyway!

That's All For Today!

  1. Sounds like a wonderful way to spend some time meeting fellow GeoCachers, then to go searching.

  2. Geocaching is intriguing. It seems a bit like the idea of leaving books in random places for people to find. The books are registered on line and their journey from owner to random owner is logged.

  3. I don't know much about Geocaching world. I'd like to have a Gps device for hiking, instead of the old fashioned compass I carry. But that's about all I know, that you need a gps device.
