The Midnight Munchies...

Black-throated sparrow with her young...

I love food...  I love the taste, the smell, the texture...  I love to grow my own veggies and I love to cook.  I'll try anything and could write many, many blogs about some of the foods I've bought and meals I've cooked.  I've prepared some incredible meals as well as some really outstanding failures.  As far as I know, the only food I'm allergic to is scallops, although there are a few (very few) foods I don't like.

But as much as I love to eat, I've never been one to eat between meals.  Oh, sometimes a mid-morning snack like an apple or an orange, but not on a regular basis.  And another thing...  once dinner is over and I've done the dishes, I'm done for the day.  I rarely eat another thing until breakfast the next morning.  Bill, on the other hand, seldom misses having his ice cream before he goes to bed.  I don't care much for ice cream so I'm not even tempted.

We've been at this gate guard job now for 6 weeks.  The first week or so it was a 24 hour job and about the time we got used to sleeping at odd hours and being up off and on all night long that phase of the job was finished and we went back to our "normal" sleeping hours.

A week ago the job went into a different phase...  back to 24 hour days...  trucks going in and out at any time.  Only thing is, there aren't a lot of trucks...  the tanker that comes to pick up oil only comes about every 5 or 6 hours.  The truck that hauls off the (water) flow is now down to about every 3 to 5 hours.  So while trucks do come in and go out, it's definitely not a busy night.

We eat dinner around 5 pm and by 6 pm I'm done with the household chores.  Bill goes to bed around 8 pm and my night shift begins.  It's warm here all night long, so I sit outside... often with my Kindle reading a good mystery.  By 8:10 I start thinking about what was left over from dinner.  By 8:30 I can't stand it any longer and head back inside to check the fridge.  Hmmmm...  a little bite of that would taste pretty good.

Back outside...  or maybe some computer time if I can get on the internet.  An hour or so and...  gee, don't I have some of that chocolate bar left in the fridge?  Maybe just a couple of bites...  that sounds good.

More reading...  more checking out whatever is skittering around outside.  I've been watching a lot of insects and other night creatures lately...  they act different than daytime critters.  I really believe this... they seem to be in a bigger hurry...  I sure didn't know a tarantula could run THAT fast!  And they flit around...  flirting with death as they fly closer and closer to the flood lights that light up the night.  Things seem more frantic to me during the night.

Tonight I saw my first snake.  My reaction time is much slower at night (or maybe it's slower during the days as well and I just hadn't noticed).  Anyway, by the time I'm trying to recite ... red on yellow... fellow?...   red on black....  the darned thing had made a quick exit.  So... was it a coral snake?  Heck, I don't know.

I just know that when I went back inside to get that serving of flan, I propped my feet up about 2' off the ground when I sat back outside to eat it.   Boy!  Was that flan good!

Bill has been getting up around 4am...  that's when I go to bed.  So I've had about 8 hours of the munchies....

I don't know what it is about nights....  but at this rate, if this job doesn't end soon I'll have to invest in bigger clothes....

It's now 1:20 am...  pardon me while I see if there are any of those packages of crackers left in the car that we keep for emergencies....

Dinner time....

That's All For Today!

  1. Funny! I do really well in my quest to lose weight until after supper. Then I almost have to tie my hands behind my back!

  2. Haha....loved this post. I'm quite the snacker. I don't eat big meals, but I do my fair of snacking. One of my favorites is popcorn.

  3. I'm such a creature of routine I believe the odd hours would have me snacking. I could not have left the flan in the fridge under any circumstances.

  4. If I am really busy, I could skip eating altogether....but if I am just sitting...I want everything I can find to eat!

  5. Better get out of there fast! :) Since I've retired, I find that I prefer snacking to having big meals.

  6. I think night-time noshing is common among us night owls. Sometimes I think it might be due to boredom. It your case, I wonder if it might be that your biological clock is confused by the hours you're keeping.

  7. I want to eat 24 hours a day. I wake up thinking about food and I go to bed thinking about food. It's a horrible thing. lol

  8. Such a sweet photo of the mamma sparrow feeding her young - and appropriate considering you posted about eating. I hope this eating phase gets phased out when you change your location. Not only will your clothes not fit, your budget will suffer, too! Ouch on both counts. :)

  10. If I was up all night I'd need to snack just to stay awake! Love that last photo-so sweet.

  11. I am a night bird too at times, but mine is by choice. We do not keep a lot of munches in the house which is a good thing, because when I get in the mood.....
