Sentimental Old Me....

Al, of the Bayfield Bunch, writes about saying Goodbye to the cacti, the desert and everything else when he leaves Arizona and heads back to Canada.  Well, he's not the only one who does such things...  it's time for Bill and me to head east again.  It's been 6 months or more since I've seen my son, my brother and sister, my daughter and her family (and just think how much our great-granddaughter has grown since then!)...  and I'm so looking forward to seeing them all again.

Our daughter and son-in-law here in Texas are the most gracious hosts you could want.  They provide us with a full hook-up... watch over our motorhome when we leave it here for months at a time...  and even more important, share their life and all that goes along with that when we're here.

They even have some fantastic birds right here in their front yard...
The bluebirds are nesting just about a hundred feet from our motorhome...  how cool is that?

And...  look what I saw this afternoon...
At first I thought I was seeing another Painted bunting, but soon realized I was seeing a Summer Tanager in it's spring plumage.

But...  like Al and Kelly had to go back to Canada, it's time for me and Bill to move on as well.  I don't do well with "goodbye"s.

When we left Costa Rica it was sad saying Goodbye to Francine and Greg.  I know I'm not very good at on-going correspondence but a day doesn't go by that I don't think of them and wonder if someday we might meet up again.

I'm just not good at it...  I'd rather slip off in the night and avoid it all...  but the older I get the more I realize that that hug ...  that smile....   that warm feeling....  is so important.

Even if I'm just walking around the yard checking out the latest flower that's blooming or the birds at the feeder...
Looky here...  even female hummingbirds are magnificent!

And so, tomorrow we'll head east again.  Yeah...  we're thinking of the slow route...  the Natchez Trace.  We've done it a couple of times before and love everything from the laid back (55 mph - 2 lane) way of travel to going slow enough to see the dogwoods in bloom.

Tomorrow morning I'll take down these bird feeders...  wash them and store them in a bin.  The flowers will stay here.  So will the deer and the birds.

We don't have to get an early start...  I'll have time to look around and appreciate once more how blessed we are...  then I'll breathe a deep sigh....  say Goodbye and off we'll go.  And I'll be so excited to be on the road and see more of my family again.

That's All For Today!

  5. I've always thought that painted buntings seemed too colorful to be real--like a creative kid with a box of crayons created them. It's a shame that they aren't more widely distributed around the country. Chances are slim that I'll ever get to see one in person. Have a nice trip back to Ohio!

  14. Hi Sharon: I agree, goodbyes are difficult for me too. But even though they're sad, I also know that goodbye always comes before the beginning of a new life adventure. So, I try to look on the sunny side of goodbyes - and what's coming down the pike! Have a relaxed and fun trip East.

  16. Hi Sharon: It looks like your first bird may actually be a Lazuli Bunting. It has white wing-bars that Bluebirds lack. But it is a blue bird!! These Buntings are migrating right now, and it's a real treat to see them.

Packing up to hit the road is always a little sobering, especially after staying somewhere familiar. But you know that Maine will be cool and wonderful and waiting for you!! Safe travels.
