The Sea, Some Birds... a Good Day!

We've been walking to the ocean every day and each day we discover something different.  Yesterday we walked along the beach and came to where it looks like a river flows into the sea.

The waves can be really high...  kind of unpredictable, at least to the likes of us.  I was trying to get a picture of this fishing boat....
Looks pretty benign, doesn't it?  Well, a huge wave came up and darned near knocked me over.  I was wearing walking shorts, but got soaked clear through to my underwear.  That didn't bother me...  the sound of the waves and the beauty of the sea and beach is worth getting wet.

Saw this guy walking along the sand...
This lone Willet was wading around in the surf...
Aside from the pelicans and the terns, he seemed to have the beach to himself.

We came to this Turtle Sanctuary...
Nobody was around, but there were several areas behind the fenced in place that either turtle eggs are buried or newly hatched turtles are kept until old enough to set free.

Kind of hard to see behind the woven-wire fence, but that cage is full of baby turtles.
There was a sign announcing when the last turtle release was (December 10)...  so I don't know when these guys will be on their own.  I think this is a place we'll find out more about...  maybe they need some volunteers to help...  we'll see.

Just past the turtle camp we came to a gate...  the path led along the river and eventually into an RV park.
As we walked along the path we could see that this is an excellent birding area...

And... sure enough...
A Yellow-crowned Night Heron

A Great blue Heron

A Great Egret

A Tri-colored Heron

We didn't have our binoculars with us...  and I was carrying only my "little" Canon, which even with its 30x zoom lens, just can't take clear photos.  Some of these birds were quite a way off, and the little camera doesn't have a stabilizer and I just couldn't hold the camera still enough.  So... today, blurry had to get it.  But...  even at that, I didn't know what I'd seen until I downloaded those photos onto my laptop.

We walked along that path, which eventually took us behind, and finally through an RV park/resort.  While we've driven our rig down here in the past, truth is, we've never really lived in such a large RV park where everything is so close together.  Makes me happy to have our bungalow/apartment.

I loved all your comments about our place....  I know I'll be posting more about it later.  But, yes, it does have a fridge ;-)

Right now, it's time to fix dinner (Thursday evening) and I'll be back tomorrow.

  5. As soon as I saw a heron I fast forwarded to find an egret, and I did. What glorious birds.

  6. I love the idea of Turtle Camp. Lucky little turtles! Do they have archery lessons, arts & crafts, and singing around the campfire?!?
